Biographical Sketch for Dr. Gregory G. Bond

Dr. Bond retired at the end of June 2014 after a 35 year career in environment, health and safety and sustainability with The Dow Chemical Company.  He has subsequently formed Manitou View Consulting, LLC which provides product safety and stewardship expertise and strategic advice to select clients.

For more than 15 years (1996-2012), Dr. Bond was Corporate Director of Product Responsibility and led Dow’s global product safety, compliance and sustainability organization, including the toxicology and environment fate laboratories.  In this role, he had administrative responsibility for an organization of 400 full time Dow professionals and approximately 100 contractor employees, and managed an annual expense budget of more than $100MM and an annual capital budget of more than $3.5MM.  He also led Dow’s governance oversight team for product safety and compliance.  Dr. Bond  frequently presented to Dow’s Board of Directors and the Executive Management team on a variety of topics ranging from efforts to comply with the EU REACH legislation, to TSCA reform to risk and issue management associated with specific products and operations.  He played an instrumental role in developing Dow’s visionary 2015 Sustainability goals and was responsible for the implementation of several of them.

From March, 2006 until December 1, 2008, Dr. Bond held the additional role of Asia Pacific EH&S Director and was based in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.  During this period, he built the local EH&S organization from 5 to more than 30 employees and led the region to achieve its strongest historical performance in personal, process and product safety.  

During the final two years of his Dow career, Dr. Bond was a loaned executive from Dow to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  In this position, Greg was a part of the leadership team administering the Dow Sustainability Fellows program http://sustainability.umich.edu/education/dow, which aimed to bring together 300 graduate and post-graduate students from all areas of the university to find interdisciplinary, actionable and meaningful solutions to some of the world’s biggest sustainability challenges.

Dr. Bond joined Dow as an epidemiologist in 1979 and conducted and published occupational and environmental epidemiology research for the next twelve years.  In 1991, he moved to the product stewardship area and was appointed Global Director of Product Stewardship in 1995. 
  
Dr. Bond has published more than sixty journal articles on epidemiology research and product stewardship and has made literally hundreds of presentations to various audiences ranging from local community groups, to graduate students, professional societies and Boards of Directors.  In 1988, he was elected a Fellow in the American College of Epidemiology.

Over the years he has served as an advisor to various government agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others.

For three years, Dr. Bond chaired the American Chemistry Council’s Health, Product and Science Policy Team and played a key leadership role in the development of a number of key industry product stewardship initiatives (e.g., US EPA High Production Chemical Challenge, and the Global Product Strategy).  He was also Vice Chairman of the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers, the leading chemical industry association in China and worked to elevate product stewardship as a priority for the local industry.

From 2007 through 2013, Dr. Bond co-chaired the International Council of Chemical Association’s Chemicals Policy and Health Leadership Group which aimed to improve the product safety performance of the global chemical industry and strengthen science and risk-based chemicals management legislation and regulation throughout the world (www.icca-chem.org).  He was the recipient of the 2009 American Chemistry Council’s Distinguished Leadership Award in recognition for this work.  He has done frequent print and visual media interviews on behalf of Dow and the global chemical industry on the topics of chemicals management policy and performance.

Dr. Bond is also currently a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan where he is also an adjunct professor of environmental health sciences.

Greg obtained a Ph.D. in Epidemiology after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and a Masters degree in Public Health, all from the University of Michigan.  He is a graduate of the executive education program at Thunderbird School of Graduate International Management and has also done coursework at IMD located in Lausanne, Switzerland.  He was elected a Fellow in the American College of Epidemiology in 1988.
